Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith is just over a year removed from a gruesome broken leg injury that has kept him out of football ever since, but Smith still dreams of returning to the gridiron.

On Monday, Smith said that his goal is to play again in 2020:

“I still have dreams of getting back to where I was and getting back out there,” Smith said, via Ethan Cadeaux of NBC Sports Washington. “This has been a crazy ride with a lot of unforeseen turns, but without a doubt, that’s still my goal.”

Smith spent much of the 2019 campaign seated alongside team owner Dan Snyder during games, which has led some to believe that the 35-year-old is coveting a front-office role, but Smith says that is not the case:

“Has there ever been a GM and quarterback?” Smith said. “I love all the rumor mill and all the stuff that circulates out there. My focus is to get out there and play again.”

Of course, even if Smith is fully healthy and capable of playing, he might have a tough time doing that in the nation's capital.

The Redskins drafted Dwayne Haskins as their quarterback of the future back in April and began grooming him as their permanent starter this season, going from Case Keenum to Haskins under center midway through the year.

Smith could always serve in a backup role, but with the signal-caller set to earn $16 million in 2020, that would certainly be a rather expensive avenue for Washington to take.
