Robert Downey Jr is shocking “open-minded” about an MCU return as Tony Stark/Iron Man.

In an interview with Jodie Foster for Variety, Robert Downey Jr revealed that being Tony Stark/Iron Man is “crazily” in his DNA and he's “surprisingly open-minded” to an MCU return. This is especially the case after taking on varied roles such as his Oscar-winning turn in Oppenheimer.

“It's just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I've ever played, even though he's way cooler than I am,” Downey told Variety. “I've become surprisingly open-minded to the idea [of returning].

“Between Nyad and [Night Country] and, for me, Oppenheimer and then Sympathizer, it really is crazy because we look pretty good. I was actually looking at the stills we were taking, making sure: ‘Do we still look kind of OK?' I'm like, ‘We look pretty good,'” he continued.

In 2008, Downey kicked off the MCU by starring in Iron Man. He was arguably the driving force of the entire MCU. He would go on to lead two more solo films and four Avengers films.

Additionally, Downey appeared as Tony Stark/Iron Man in other MCU projects. These include The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: Civil War, and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

In Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark/Iron Man dies. He triumphantly defeats Thanos (Josh Brolin) and uses the Infinity Stones to end the climactic battle. However, this kills Stark, and he has not been seen in the MCU since.

With these comments, it does appear that Downey is prime for a return down the line. Whether this comes in a future Avengers film or a series like Ironheart remains to be seen.
