Alabama came into the Rose Bowl as heavy favorites over Notre Dame and a large reason why was DeVonta Smith. After catching two touchdown passes earlier in the game, Smith continued his dominance on Friday by catching another touchdown in the third quarter.
Smith was the first player to score in Friday's game, giving Alabama an early 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Crimson Tide and Smith haven't looked back with Smith extending Alabama's lead to 28-7 with his impressive toe-tap touchdown in the third quarter.
The senior wideout for Alabama has had a remarkable season, hauling in 98 passes for 1,511 yards and 17 touchdowns coming into Friday's game. Ever since Jaylen Waddle went down with a season-ending injury earlier in the season, Smith's explosiveness allowed the offense to never miss a beat.
It's apparent that Smith of Alabama has become the No. 1 option for Mac Jones as he continues to make his case as the best wide receiver in college football. There's a great chance that Smith is the first or one of the first wide receivers taken in the 2021 NFL Draft in April.
When it comes to the Heisman Trophy, an award Alabama has claimed several times in recent seasons, the award usually is given to a quarterback or running back. As a matter of fact, a quarterback or running back has earned the prestigious award every year since the 1998 season.
However, Smith is among the Heisman Trophy finalists this season, along with his Alabama teammate in Jones, Trevor Lawrence, and Kyle Trask. Seeing that Smith continues to be a headache for opposing defenses in the college football playoffs, he could become the first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy since Desmond Howard did it in 1991 for the Michigan Wolverines, leading Gary Moeller's team to the 1992 Rose Bowl against the Washington Huskies.
