It has been more than a year since trading cards really exploded back onto the scene. From NBA cards to those that feature wrestlers and famous comic book characters, there’s a wide variety of offerings out there right now. But in all of these products on the market, there are two that present amazing investment opportunities for collectors: WNBA and Pokemon cards. While the latter is more well-known, there are some cards from this set that can reach new heights. The same can also be said about WNBA cards, which have untapped potential. From these products, we take a look at two different Sabrina cards — WNBA's Sabrina Ionescu and Pokemon's Sabrina’s Gengar — to see which is the better investment.

Sabrina Ionescu Card

At first glance, it’s easy to pass up on Sabrina Ionescu’s Prizm rookie card. In comparison, the WNBA has a smaller market than its more famous counterpart, the NBA. Nevertheless, there’s still a good reason for card collectors to keep their eyes on this market, especially Ionescu’s stock.

For one, Ionescu’s talent is a sure thing. Before entering the WNBA, the point guard dominated the NCAA scene by becoming the only player to notch 2,000 points, 1,000 assists, and 1,000 rebounds during her career. Her impressive credentials led the New York Liberty to choose her with the No. 1 pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft.

While her rookie season was derailed by the pandemic, Ionescu still put up impressive numbers. In the three games she played for New York, the top rookie last year averaged 18.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. While her scoring numbers have dropped in her second year in the league, Ionescu still remains one of the most intriguing young stars in the WNBA.

Over on eBay, Ionescu’s fame has rubbed off on her PSA 10 Prizm rookie card price. A gem mint slab of this card recently sold for $750 on the same platform. Just last May, prices for the same graded card hovered around $535. This increase in less than two months shows a healthy upward trend for Ionescu’s card stock.

Sabrina’s Gengar Card

While Ionescu’s PSA 10 card value is on the rise, can the same be said for this 2000 Pokemon Gym Heroes Sabrina’s Gengar First Edition Holo card?

In hindsight, the Pokemon card market often rivals the prices of its basketball, football, and baseball counterparts. Just recently, Logan Paul wore a BGS 10 First-Edition Charizard Holo Pokemon card around his neck before a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather. Said card was valued at $150,000 at the time Paul purchased it.

Meanwhile, the PSA 10 value of Sabrina’s Gengar card isn’t doing so well. At the start of May, a gem-mint slab of the card sold for $6,000. That number went down when another PSA 10 copy went for $4,150 this week.

The Verdict

Of the two, it’s Sabrina’s Gengar card that holds the better value now. The thing is, it’s currently trending down, which can go on further in the coming weeks. On the other hand, Ionescu’s Prizm rookie card has a better growth outlook from where its price is right now.

Sabrina Ionescu, NCAA

Needless to say, the winner of this bout is Sabrina Ionescu. Those who have the chance to scoop up this WNBA star should do so while it’s still within reasonable reach right now.
