With the 2020 NFL Draft coming up, it's time to dream about scenarios, and one of those that could play out is the Atlanta Falcons having a chance to draft Tua Tagovailoa.
With this draft, there are a lot of unknowns, and with teams not being able to bring in Tagovailoa to take a better look at his hip, that could cause him to drop.
Hitting on a first-round pick is important, and it's even more important when taking a franchise quarterback. With the question marks, some teams picking in the top 10 like the Miami Dolphins or Los Angeles Chargers could decide to go in a different direction and select Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert.
If Tagovailoa has a big fall and the Falcons have a chance to select him at No. 16 overall, the team needs to take the former Alabama Crimson Tide standout.
Not often this chance comes around
Matt Ryan is 34 years old and although he is getting older, he has still proven to be good and probably has some good years left in play. At some point though, the Falcons need to start looking towards the future, and this is the perfect time to get that done.
With the injury to Tagovailoa, it probably is best for him to take one year to make sure he is fully healthy and to sit for a season behind Ryan.
After that one year, as long as Ryan plays well this season and stays healthy, the Falcons could trade Ryan away and probably get a first-round pick back.
If that was the case, they would get their franchise quarterback for the next 10-15 years, and do it for free with the return of the draft pick.
What can Tua bring to the Falcons?
Tagovailoa was a highly touted quarterback coming out of high school, and he lived up to the expectations during his time with the Crimson Tide.
Tua would instantly become one of the most accurate passers in the NFL, and his football IQ is also high. Not often does he have brain farts, and the hope is he can bring that with him to the NFL.
The one big concern with him involves the ankle and hip injury, but hopefully, those are all behind him. There is a lot of pressure on first-round quarterbacks, but being at No. 16 could take a little pressure off of him.
If it doesn't work out, and they don't feel comfortable handing the keys of the franchise over to him, they could keep Ryan around and pick the better of the two.
