There's a strong chance Monty Williams will be the next head coach of the Phoenix Suns.

Marc Stein of New York Times reported about the development on Wednesday, citing that Williams to the Suns is gaining momentum. He also pointed out that the current Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach has the luxury to choose where he will coach next, considering that he is expected to attract plenty of teams.

The Suns finished in a tie with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second-worst record in the NBA this season (19-63). Phoenix also hasn't tasted playoff basketball in nine years.

The team fired head coach Igor Kokoskov on April 24 after just one season. Interim GM James Jones cited that their record was not the reason why the Serbian tactician was sacked, while Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports that Kokoskov “fell victim to a roster devoid of point guards and organizational dysfunction.”

Monty Williams doesn't have a successful track record as an NBA head coach. In five seasons in New Orleans from 2010 to 2015, he amassed a 173-221 (.439) win-loss record. However, he has helped the Sixers become a title contender this season.

If he gets the Suns' head coaching job, Williams will work with a young roster that includes Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, Josh Jackson and T.J. Warren.

Coaching a young and inexperienced bunch won't be an easy task, for sure. Williams' biggest challenge is to develop the Suns' youngsters. Hopefully, Phoenix will taste NBA playoff basketball once again sooner than later.
