The Houston Texans were dealt their first obstacle of the 2018 NFL season when safety Andre Hal was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. It appears they have already found a viable option in cornerback Kareem Jackson.

Jackson was asked to take reps at safety this offseason as a potential contingency plan. According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, he has done so well that Houston will keep him there through training camp:

Texans cornerback Kareem Jackson did so well at safety during the offseason program that he's going to play the position full time when he gets to training camp.

It is not uncommon for cornerbacks to make the switch to safety in their later years. Jackson has tried his hand covering over the top in recent years. However, it seems he is finally going to make an official transition.

The move hardly comes as any surprise. The Texans boast some tremendous depth at corner. Unfortunately, the loss of Hal deals a blow to the secondary and their last line of defense. As a result, head coach Bill O'Brien felt comfortable enough to let Jackson try his hand elsewhere and it appears to have worked out.

The veteran has made all 108 of his career starts at cornerback. However, he will now compete with rookie safety Justin Reid for the role on defense. Jackson will have the luxury of joining newly-acquired safety Tyrann Mathieu over the top of Houston's defense. Needless to say, all the new changes have added a versatile dynamic to this unit moving forward.
