The Houston Texans have made a big splash before the second night of the draft locking up Laremy Tunsil to a long term extension according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the three-year contract extension is worth $22 million. It has $57 million in guarantees and includes $13 million signing bonus.

This makes him the highest-paid offensive tackle in NFL history by a long shot. Anthony Castonzo of the Indianapolis Colts, currently is the highest-paid average salary for an offensive lineman sitting at $16.5 million. The $57 million guaranteed is also the highest ever for an offensive line.

The Texans traded for Tunsil from the Miami Dolphins before the start of the 2019 season. Before he was traded from the Dolphins he was one of the most well liked players on the team. There were reports the Dolphins revolt if the team were to trade him. Tunsil is only 25 years old, so this is a deal that makes a whole lot of sense for both sides. After giving up draft capital, the Texans couldn't afford to lose him without getting a long term deal done.

Tunsil will also have another chance to sign a long term deal before he turns 30 years old. If he plays well for the next three seasons, the next contract could be another record-breaker.

There have been some who have questioned the moves the Texans have made this offseason, but this one makes a lot of whole sense. He is the anchor of the offensive line, and they couldn't afford to lose him.
