The guessing game for the starting quarterback is now over for the Houston Texans. Head coach Bill O’Brien effectively put an end to months of speculation about the topic by categorically saying that Tom Savage is going to start right from Week 1 of the upcoming season, according to a report by Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

“Tom's the starter,” O'Brien said Tuesday. “Tom has really had a good camp. He's only thrown three incompletions in two games. He's got a really good command of the offense.”

This news also solidifies Deshaun Watson’s status as a backup quarterback in his rookie year. Watson, the first-round pick of Houston in this year’s NFL Draft, has played generally well in the preseason and comes with loads of hype following a successful college career at Clemson, but it weighs for to O’Brien that Savage has been with the team longer and is more familiar with the Texans’ playbook.

“Deshaun is a very, very good young player who has a bright future in this league,” O'Brien said. “Let's put the cards on the table, but Tom has been here for four years. The way we want to play, the style relative to getting guys lined up, protection points, route reads, putting guys in the right spots, Tom's ahead of Deshaun.”

Savage, a fourth-round pick in 2014, played in three games last season, mostly in lieu of failed Texans project, Brock Osweiler, and finished the year with 461 passing yards with zero touchdowns and an interception.
