At long last, the Texas A&M football program will face off against the Texas Longhorns in a conference matchup. Amid a flurry of realignment moves across college sports, Oklahoma and Texas are leaving the Big 12 Conference to join the SEC.

During the SEC Meetings that began on Tuesday, Texas A&M football coach Mike Elko was asked about playing the Longhorns, and he gave an honest response (h/t Brett McMurphy).

“We should play them. When you have 2 programs like that in same state 2 hours away they should play every year and it should mean a lot.”

The distance between the two schools is just over 100 miles and two hours way, which should make for a fantastic rivalry game in the new-look SEC. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian also spoke about the Longhorns' move to the SEC and playing in the same conference as the Aggies, per Brett McMurphy:

“There was so much talk about realignment. For us, we gained two rivals back. We're playing Arkansas & Texas A&M again. We're looking forward to it (A&M). I'm sure they are too.”

The realignment discussions were plenty for the last couple of years, with schools such as Oklahoma and Texas going to the SEC, as well as Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah going to the new-look Big 12 with USC, UCLA, Washington and Oregon off to the Big Ten. This doesn't include the ACC adding schools like SMU, Cal, and Stanford, so things will look much different all-around once the 2024 season kicks off.

Texas A&M-Texas series history

The Texas A&M-Texas football rivalry was one of the best in the game, that is, before the Aggies departed the Big 12 for the SEC. The two storied programs played each other every season from 1915 until 2011.

The all-time series record has Texas in the lead with a 76-37-5 mark, and the two programs have not played against one another since the 2011 season. Yet, here we are, with the two suddenly becoming conference foes again, this time in the SEC.

The back-and-forth went on for the past decade as they attempted to play one another, but nothing ever came to fruition.

New Aggies head coach Mike Elko, who came over from Duke and took over for Jimbo Fisher, has a lot of work to do with lofty expectations every year around College Station. Now, playing Texas adds even more intrigue to the upcoming season, especially after the horrendous ending with Fisher.

After over a decade of no rivalry game, the Texas-Texas A&M showdown is back in SEC fashion.

So, the final game for the Texas A&M football program in 2024 will be a home game against Texas on November 30 in College Station. The rivalry returns at long last and it should be a sight to see.
