The Chicago Bears have struggled through a brutal season after being one of the best teams in the NFL in 2018. With a ton of hype coming into the season and some saying Mitchell Trubisky would be an MVP candidate, the Bears have been eliminated from playoff contention and are just 7-8.
It has been a tough season, but the toughest part has been the questions that have come from Trubisky's performance. Chicago cannot be 100 percent sold that Trubisky is the future under center. He has shown some flashes late in the season, but his overall performance has been poor.
On the season, Trubisky has completed 62.6 percent of his pass attempts for 2,931 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. The numbers obviously are not what the Bears were expecting. That production has led to many thinking the Bears should take a look at a young quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft.
The Bears don't have a first-round pick, which means that they won't get any of the elite signal callers like Justin Herbert or Tua Tagovailoa. There is an option that they could take a look at in the second round.
Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm could be an intriguing second-round option for the Bears. At one point in time, many thought he would end up being one of the top quarterbacks in the class. He is still a very solid all-around quarterback, but he isn't receiving the hype of other names.
During the 2019 season with the Bulldogs, Fromm has completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 2,610 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just five interceptions. There is some work to do to improve his completion percentage, but the tools are all there for him to be a solid NFL prospect.
Fromm stands in at 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds. He has excellent mechanics, but there are some concerns about his athletic ability.
Back in July, Bleacher Report wrote a great column about Fromm being an excellent prospect for win-ready teams. That couldn't be more true. Fromm is the guy in this class that is capable of stepping in and immediately contributing as a day two quarterback.
All of that being said, the Bears should absolutely take a look at drafting Fromm. They will pick in the middle of the second round and there is a chance that the Georgia standout could still be there. If he is, the Bears shouldn't hesitate to bring him in.
How would that impact Trubisky's future in Chicago? Quite frankly, it would give him the push and competition that he needs. If he can't beat Fromm out, then the selection of the rookie would be proven correct.
On the other hand, if Trubisky uses the motivation and becomes the quarterback the Bears think he can be, they could have a valuable backup quarterback or trade asset.
Drafting Jake Fromm is a win-win situation for the Bears. Don't be surprised if they look into this option.
