Antony Starr has played Homelander for the Prime Video superhero series, The Boys, since 2019 — but will he be in the DCU? The actor was recently asked about appearing in James Gunn's universe in the forthcoming Booster Gold series.
Speaking to ComicBook, Starr responded to being in the Booster Gold series. He downplayed his relationship with Gunn, whom he called “amazing.”
“Me and James just play golf,” he said.
He did add that he's excited about the DCU refresh and to see what Gunn and Peter Safran do.
“I cannot wait to see what he does with the DC Universe,” he added. “I think he's a phenomenal director, producer, talent. He's one of the biggest brands in the industry, so I'm excited to see what he cooks up.”
It doesn't sound like Starr is heading to the DCU anytime soon. He first has the fourth season of The Boys to promote ahead of its June 13 premiere.
The DCU is the James Gunn and Peter Safran-led reboot of the DCEU. Zack Snyder kicked off the DCEU in 2013 with Man of Steel. Films including Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and The Flash were subsequently released.
After years of diminishing results, the DCEU has concluded. Gunn and Safran were appointed the co-heads of DC Studios and will oversee the DCU. Creature Commandos will kick off the DCU on the animated series side while Superman will be the first film.
What is The Boys?
Prime Video's The Boys is an adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic book of the same name. The title team is made up of vigilantes who take down people who abuse their powers.
Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, and Starr lead the ensemble. Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, and Nathan Mitchell also star in the series.
Eric Kripke developed the show and is the showrunner. Several high-profile producers are attached to the project including Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg of Point Grey. The Boys premiered its first eight-episode season on July 26, 2019. Two more seasons followed in 2020 and 2022, respectively.
The Boys has also received several spin-off projects. First was the web series Seven on 7. An animated series, Diabolical, was released in 2022. Gen V is perhaps the most notable spin-off and featured the likes of Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, and the late Chance Perdomo.
Who is Antony Starr?
Antony Starr first gained notoriety for his dual roles in Outrageous Fortune. Starr has also had a recurring role on Mercy Peak from 2001-03 and leading roles in Tricky Business, Banshee, and American Gothic. He would later land his biggest role to date in The Boys.
His character from The Boys, Homelander, has become iconic. Homelander is featured in other projects such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Mortal Kombat 1.
On the big screen, Starr made his film debut in 2004 appearing in two films, In My Father's Den and Without a Paddle. He has also appeared in films such as Wish You Were Here, The Covenant, and Cobweb.
