The Marvels flopped at the box office and hit a sad MCU milestone.

Worst. Opening. Ever.

During its opening weekend, The Marvels opened atop the domestic chart. It grossed $47 million and beat out Five Nights at Freddy's, which grossed $9 million in its third weekend. While first place is always ideal, it's a low mark for the MCU.

The $47 million debut is the lowest in the entire MCU's history. There have been 33 different films released in the MCU, and none have made just $47 million. The Incredible Hulk has the next lowest domestic debut in the franchise, making $55.4 million in 2008. Ant-Man only made $57 million in 2015.

This was the lowest domestic MCU debut since Eternals, which made $71 million. That same year, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings made just $75 million just two months prior.

Deadline is reporting that The Marvels made a cumulative $110.3 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This estimate includes $63,3 million overseas. That is still the lowest in the franchise to date.

For the MCU, this is a troubling sign. They will also have to wait a while before being able to tell if this is an anomaly or not. With the SAG-AFTRA strike concluding, Disney and Marvel Studios had to make major shifts to their release slate. Deadpool 3 is now the only 2024 MCU release as of the time of this writing, and the next film, Captain America: Brave New World, will be released on February 14, 2025.

In the meantime, Disney+ MCU shows will be released. The second season of What If? and Echo are next up.

The Marvels is in theaters now.
