The NBA world was caught by surprise when the Minnesota Timberwolves traded for star center Rudy Gobert. It turns out that Karl-Anthony Towns was also surprised by the move.
In a recent interview on ESPN’s NBA Today, Karl-Anthony Towns explains how he heard about the trade, and who he thought it was originally for.

Karl- Anthony Towns explains that he found out the news through his girlfriend. He originally believed that the Timberwolves acquired veteran forward Rudy Gay. After a slight clarification on her part, Towns learned that it was Rudy Gobert who would be joining him in Minnesota.
Towns went on to say, “I was excited. I didn't know what was happening but I just saw the vision of us both twin towers out there. What he can do defensively, what I can do offensively, and we all putting that together for one organization, for one team. I think it's going to be very different.” Towns finished by saying “The NBA hasn’t seen something like this. It's going to be unique, and it's going to be scary.”
The Timberwolves mortgaged much of their future by trading for Gobert. Minnesota was forced to offer a massive trade package. This included Walker Kessler, Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverley, Jarred Vanderbilt, and multiple first-round picks.
Karl-Anthony Towns isn't far off by saying that the NBA has never seen a pairing such as this. With Towns coming in at 6-11, and Gobert being 7-1, they will be one of the biggest frontcourts in league history.
While this isn't Rudy Gay like Towns originally believed, Gobert will bring a defensive presence that few players can. Gobert, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, will immediately make this group better inside. With a roster that also consists of a young star in Anthony Edwards and a proven guard in D'Angelo Russell, the Timberwolves could find themselves in championship contention this season.
