Minnesota Timberwolves small forward Jimmy Butler won't play Sunday night against the Portland Trail Blazers due to precautionary rest.

After Sunday's game versus the Blazers, Minnesota will travel to Los Angeles to take on the Clippers Monday night at Staples Center. They'll have Tuesday off before playing against LeBron James and the Lakers Wednesday.

Timberwolves head coach and president Tom Thibodeau says the organization wants to be smart with Jimmy Butler, who requested a trade almost seven weeks ago. The four-time All-Star didn't play at all during the preseason.

In seven games this season, Butler is averaging 22.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting 49.1 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from beyond the arc and 82.1 percent from the free-throw line. The Timberwolves enter Sunday with a record of 4-5.

Butler told reporters recently that he's going to make the call whether he plays or not. The 29-year-old says only he knows how his body is feeling. Butler underwent an elective hand surgery in July and is still dealing with some soreness.

The Jimmy Butler saga has dragged on for too long now. Consider this: The Indiana Pacers fined guard Tyreke Evans for being late to practice and sat him out one game. The Timberwolves haven't disciplined Butler once for any of the antics he's pulled.

Minnesota owner Glen Taylor has to be ashamed with how his team is began ran at the moment.
