It is a week two match-up as Tulsa heads west to play Washington. It is time to continue our College Football odds series with a Tulsa-Washington prediction, pick, and how-to-watch.

Last week, Tulsa took care of business in a big way. It was a slow start for the Golden Hurricane, allowing an early first-quarter touchdown from Micahel Jamerson after Braylon Braxton threw an interception for Tulsa and gave Arkansas-Pine Bluff a short field. Later, Braxton would leave the game with an injury, but Cardell Williams would step in and help Tulsa get going. He would run three yards for a score early in the second quarter, and then throw three touchdowns in the quarter as well, including an 8-yarder to give Tulsa a 28-7 lead. Tulsa would add two more touchdowns in the second half and win 42-7.

Meanwhile, Washington ripped through the Boise State defense. Boise State got up 6-0 early, with a first-quarter touchdown, but Washington struck back. They would score four times in the second quarter, all from touchdown passes by Michael Penix Jr. Washington took a 28-12 lead into the half and would pour it on in the second half. After Boise State got a touchdown back on their first drive of the second half, Washington would score four more touchdowns to come away with a 56-19 win.

Why Tulsa Will Cover The Spread

Cardell Williams was nearly perfect in his first game of the season and now is in line to get the start. Last game he went 13-14 for 233 yards and three scored. He was pushing the ball downfield well with an average of 16.6 yards per attempt and a depth of target of 11.9 yards per attempt. He threw a few nice balls downfield with accuracy and had solid protection. In the game, he was pressured on just four dropbacks. It did result in two sacks, but he did scramble for positive yardage once. He will need to have this accuracy and protection again if Tulsa is going to cover in this one.

Meanwhile, his receiving score helped him a lot. Marquis Shoulders caught five of the six passes thrown his way in the game. He came away with 132 yards and two scored from that. He was great after the catch, having 48 yards after the catch, most of them on his 80-yard touchdown reception. Meanwhile, Devan Williams did his part too. He caught all three targets thrown his way, grabbing 62 yards. He also had 40 yards after the catch. Both receivers had an average depth of target past 15 yards and showed that they could be a deep threat if not covered well in this game.

The defense was also solid on the pass rush. The Tulsa defense ended up with 29 quarterback pressures in the game with six sacks and four more hits on the quarterback. Ben Kopenski was amazing. He ended the game with ten quarterback pressures, two hits on the quarterback, and three sacks in the game. He also had seven stops for offensive failures and ended up with a total of eight tackles. The one issue was when the quarterback for Arkansas-Pine Bluff had time and could go over the middle. The two starting safety for Tulsa allowed six of the seven targets on them to be completed. While it did not result in a touchdown, that was nearly half of the passing yardage in the game on those two defensive backs.

Why Washington Will Cover The Spread

Michael Penix Jr. showed why he is a candidate for the Heisman this year. While only playing part of the game, Penix went 29-40 for 450 yards and five scores. He had three deep passes that were hit with a precision that led to big yardage but was smart with the ball. He has just one turnover-worthy pass while throwing the ball away four times if he had to. Penix pushed the ball downfield well, with an average depth of target at 12.5 yards downfield. Meanwhile, he was protected well. On 42 dropbacks, he was only pressured six times, leading to just one sack and one scramble for positive yardage. The pass blocking was amazing, with the offensive line allowing just two of the pressures, and three starters ending up with pass-blocking grades over 85 according to PFF.

Meanwhile, Rome Adunze showed he may be one of the best receivers in the country. He took in seven of eight targets in the game for 132 yards. He also scored once. Adunze was making things happen downfield as well. His average depth of target was 17.1 yards downfield, while he also brought in 40 yards after the catch. Tight end Jack Westover also showed he is reliable. He brought in all five of his targets for 59 yards and a touchdown in the game, while blocking well.

Further, on defense, some players had amazing games. Carson Bruener was one of them, doing a little bit of everything. He had two tackles in the game while making two stops for offensive failures. What was great was his coverage. He picked off a pass in the game and also shut down the entire short middle of the field. Still, there is some work to be done for the Huskies defense. They ended up with just 14 quarterbacks pressured in the game and came away with just one sack. Cardell Williams showed for Tulsa that if he has time, he can make big throws, so Washington will need to improve in that regard.

Final Tulsa-Washington Prediction & Pick

Last year, the Huskies finished second in the nation in total offense while having the best passing attack in the nation. They showed that against a highly-rated Boise State defense. Meanwhile, Tulsa does not have the same level of pass defense. Michael Penix Jr. is going to be able to get the ball downfield with ease. Washington showed last week they are in it to grab style points to make a case for the playoffs. They will show that again this week.

Final Tulsa-Washington Prediction & Pick: Washington -34.5 (-108) and Over 65.5 (-105)
