After Inside Out 2 ignited the 2024 summer box office — Lee Isaac Chung's Twisters with Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones could continue the hot streak with its projection.

Boxoffice Pro is reporting that Twisters' long-range box office forecast for its July 19 opening weekend is between $65 and $95 million domestically.

“Hitting theaters 28 years after its predecessor, Universal's reboot/sequel Twisters is banking on a combination of nostalgia and the growing star power of leads Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell to draw audiences to the big screen,” their analysis reads.

If Twisters comes in on the high end of its box office projection, that would top the likes of Dune: Part Two ($82 million) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($80 million). Even at its lower end, a $95 million opening weekend would top Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ($58 million), Kung Fu Panda 4 ($57 million), and Bad Boys: Ride or Die ($56 million).

Pixar's Inside Out 2 has single-handedly saved the summer box office season. The Pixar sequel has not even been out for two full weeks and has made nearly $800 million worldwide. It was powered by its $154 million domestic opening weekend — that was over $60 million higher than its predecessor.

Twisters does not have nearly the same IP force behind it — Twitster made nearly $500 million in 1996 — but it does feature up-and-coming stars as Boxoffice Pro noted. Powell and Edgar-Jones are two of the biggest rising stars in Hollywood.

Twisters is a standalone sequel to the 1996 movie Twister. Edgar-Jones and Powell lead a star-studded ensemble with Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, and David Corenswet.

Lee Isaac Chung directed the movie. He gained mainstream fame for his movie Minari, which was nominated for six Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) developed the story and Mark L. Smith wrote the script.

Twisters follows Kate Carter (Edgar-Jones) who is testing new tornado tracking systems. This is when she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), a social media star who chronicles his storm-chasing. They initially face off on competing teams before having to work together as they fight for survival.

Who are Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones?

Glen Powell has jumped in popularity over the last couple of years. His breakout came in Top Gun: Maverick and he subsequently had roles in Hit Man and Anyone But You.

The former was co-written by Powell and Richard Linklater. Hit Man premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival before hitting Netflix in June 2024. Anyone But You also starred Sydney Sweeney and was a hit for the rom-com genre, grossing over $200 million worldwide.

Daisy Edgar-Jones started her career starring in TV series. She was featured in the likes of Cold Feet, War of the Worlds, and Normal People. After making her feature film debut in Pond Life, she starred in the horror movie Fresh with Sebastian Stan.

She gained further recognition for her performance in Where the Crawdads Sing. Edgar-Jones played Kya Clark in the movie and starred alongside Taylor John Smith and Harris Dickinson.

In 2022, Edgar-Jones starred in another acclaimed series: Under the Banner of Heaven. Andrew Garfield and Wyatt Russell also starred in the series.

Twisters will be released on July 19.
