Rian Johnson's Knives Out 3, properly titled Wake Up Dead Man, seemingly pays homage to U2. The title is shared with a song from the Irish rock band's 1997 album, Pop.

While it hasn't been officially confirmed as a reference to the band, it would make sense. The franchise's title, Knives Out, is a Radiohead song. The first sequel, Glass Onion, was named after a Beatles song from the White Album. That film also featured Edward Norton playing “Blackbird” on Paul McCartney's guitar.

U2 has acknowledged the Knives Out 3 title. In a post on X, which Johnson liked, they quote posted the title reveal from the official Knives Out account. “We see what you did there… @rianjohnson,” the post read.

What is Knives Out 3 about?

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is the third film in Rian Johnson's series. Daniel Craig will return as Detective Benoit Blanc.

Plot details are unknown, however, the cast is slowly coming to form. Josh O'Connor, fresh off of his Challengers fame, will star in the film with Priscilla star Cailee Spaeny. O'Connor is also known for his role in The Crown while Spaeny just starred in Civil War from Alex Garland. Coming up, she will star in Alien: Romulus.

The Knives Out franchise began in 2019 with the inaugural film. The murder mystery film grossed over $312 million on a $40 million budget. Netflix acquired the rights to the two subsequent sequels.

They released Glass Onion in 2022. It premiered at that year's Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and received a one-week theatrical release. The film made over $13 million at the box office and hit Netflix a month later on December 23, 2022.

What is U2's “Wake Up Dead Man”?

“Wake Up Dead Man” is the final track from their Pop album. The song was played on several shows of the “PopMart” tour in 1997-97. They would also play it at a handful of shows on the “Elevation” tour in 2001, per U2Gigs.

Pop was not one of U2's finest moments. They followed the acclaimed Achtung Baby and Zooropa albums with it and were met with underwhelming results. It resulted in a rebrand heading into 2000's All That You Can't Leave Behind. That album featured the likes of “Elevation” and “Beautiful Day,” some of the band's biggest hits to this day.
