U2 kicked off their Sphere residency on September 29, 2023, releasing their latest single, “Atomic City,” on the same date. That was the first of 40 shows in Las Vegas. This was also the first time that the band had played a concert residency.

The shows revolved around their 1991 album, Achtung Baby. Like their 2017 (and 2019 leg) “Joshua Tree” anniversary tour, U2 played the album in full. Achtung Baby tracks like “So Cruel” and “Love Is Blindness” were dusted off for the first time in decades.

Bono, The Edge, and Adam Clayton were present for the residency. Larry Mullen Jr. sat out of the residency due to his recovery from health issues. Krezip's drummer Bram van den Berg filled in for Mullen for all 40 shows.

U2's final Sphere show took place on March 2, 2024. The show was filled with surprises, including Daniel Lanois' appearance during “One” and the band performing “40” to close out the show.

What's next for U2?

It's unclear what the future holds for U2. The past decade has largely been a part of the “Songs of” era. This era for the band commenced in 2014 with the release of Songs of Innocence. The album was largely focused on Bono and the band's childhood growing up in Dublin during the Troubles.

Songs of Experience followed in 2017. Bono then wrote his memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, in 2022. He subsequently embarked on a solo book tour, “Stories of Surrender.” To tie in with the memoir, U2 re-recorded 40 of their songs for Songs of Surrender.
