The first fight of UFC 276's main card ended early after Sean O'Malley was disqualified for poking Pedro Munhoz's eye in the second round. Fans, and O'Malley himself, were quick to accuse Munhoz of exaggerating his injury in order to avoid the matchup with “Sugar.” On Sunday, Munhoz revealed that he was diagnosed with a right corneal abrasion as a result of the accidental eye poke from O'Malley on Saturday night, per Marc Raimondi.
The fight was called off after Munhoz could be heard saying he couldn't see anything but “black” out of his right eye. The UFC's referee called off the fight, which was ruled a no-decision to the accidental eye poke.
There was significant skepticism among UFC fans as to whether or not Munhoz was truly unable to see out of his eye. Allegations that he was faking the injury took off on Reddit after Munhoz posted a photo to social media in which he appeared to be closing the wrong eye, apparently forgetting which eye was injured in the fight.
Despite there being some doubt regarding Munhoz's injury, the Brazilian UFC fighter informed ESPN on Sunday that he had suffered a corneal abrasion, or in other words, a scratched cornea.
Munhoz had lost his previous two fights in the UFC but was still clinging onto the No. 10 ranking in the Bantamweight division at 19-7-0. O'Malley was ranked No. 13 entering the fight with a record of 15-1-0. This was the second no-contest of Munhoz's career and the first for O'Malley.
Despite O'Malley's claims that he was ‘dominating' in his bout against Munhoz, the judge's scorecards after the first round indicated that the Brazilian was actually ahead 10-9 in the eyes of two of the three UFC officials.
