With football right around the corner, the USA Today Top 25 preseason poll has been released, giving us the first look at the college football rankings entering the season.

The names that top the list should come as no surprise. The top 5 of the USA Today poll goes: Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Georgia, in that order. It seems every year, at least to start the season, the college football rankings are much of the same.

What's intriguing about this year is the turnover at the quarterback position for some of the premier programs. Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State have become mainstays in the College Football Playoff and in the college football rankings. However, all three will be ushering in a new quarterback while Oklahoma returns Spencer Rattler and Georgia returns J.T. Daniels.

A couple of dark horse teams to keep an eye on that are gaining plenty of attention include: Iowa State (No. 8), North Carolina (No. 9), and Cincinnati (No. 10). All will start the season in the top 10 of the college football rankings but outside that top tier that is usually cemented into the playoff.

After the chaos of last season due to the pandemic, college football will hopefully feel normal once again in 2021. The Pac 12 had a shortened season a year ago, games were cancelled left and right and there was never any rhythm to the season. This year will hopefully be different.
