New York Yankees fans were not too thrilled when they saw outfielder Trent Grisham going to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning of Sunday's series finale in the Bronx against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After all, Grisham entered the game batting just .083 on the season. He also walked in his first plate appearance of the game in the second inning and struck out looking in his second plate appearance in the fourth frame. Grisham was only inserted by manager Aaron Boone into the lineup to cover the void left by hurting superstar Juan Soto.

Yankees fans chanted “We want Soto!” when Grisham was making his third plate appearance of the game. It did not take long before Grisham changed the tune into a roaring sound of cheers, as he hit a three-run home run off of Dodgers ace Tyler Glasnow to put the Yankees in front by two runs, 5-3.

After the game, Yankees superstar Aaron Judge said that he was not a fan of how New York fans treated Grisham before that 394-foot blast.

“I wasn't too happy with it,” Judge shared following the Yankees' 6-4 victory (h/t Jorge Castillo of ESPN). “But I think he made a good point, got his point across there with that homer.”

Grisham was asked as well after the game if he heard the chants and he said he did,but also noted that the home run he hit was not about trying to silence the haters.

Overall, Grisham went 1-for-2 with three RBIs and two walks to raise his season numbers to .100/.258/.280. Those are not excellent digits by any means, but his performance against the Dodgers could be the start of something good for Grisham, who was the other player the San Diego Padres sent to the Yankees with Soto in a blockbuster trade last December that cost New York Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez, and Kyle Higashioka.

As for Judge, he closed out his individual performance in the Dodgers series strong, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Through three games against Los Angeles, the former American League Most Valuable Player went .636/.714/1.636 with three home runs, five runs driven, and three walks. So far in the 2024 MLB regular season, Judge is batting .305/.436/.703 with 24 home runs and 59 RBIs.

Yankees avoid a sweep in home series vs. Dodgers

Thanks in large part to Grisham coming out of nowhere to play the hero for his team, the Yankees avoided an embarrassing sweep at home against the Dodgers. The Yankees lost the series opener, 2-1, and the second leg, 11-3. Luis Gil can also thank Grisham for keeping his record away from a second loss this season. Gil allowed three earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings for a no-decision start. Caleb Ferguson picked up the pitching win for the Yankees, Luke Weaver had his eighth hold of the season, and Clay Holmes recorded his 19th save of the year.

With the win, New York got back on track and improved their record to 46-21, better by 2.5 games than the rest of their rivals in the American League East division.

Up next for the Yankees is a four-game series on the road versus the Kansas City Royals that starts this Monday before a three-leg set at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox to finish the week.
