For Youngstown State, they came away with a win in week one over the Valparsio Beacons. It started early with a 62-yard run by Tyshon King for a score. The Penguins would score two another touchdown and a field goal in the second quarter and enter the half up 17-10. The second half is where they turned it on. they would shut out Valparaiso while scoring five touchdowns. They had a special teams touchdown on a bunt, and four more on the ground, including a second from Tyshon King. The Penguins had to face an established quarterback at Valparaiso and confused him regularly. This week, they will face two quarterbacks looking to establish themselves at Ohio State.

Ohio State also took a win in week one, beating Indiana 23-3. While the defense for Ohio State was solid, holding Indiana to just 153 yards, the offense struggled. Ohio State was just 2-12 on third down, while also throwing an interception. In the first half, Ohio State scored just ten points and struggled the move the ball to their top playmakers. The Hoosiers held Marvin Harrison Jr. to just two receptions and 18 yards, and Emeka Egbuka to three receptions and 16 yards.

Why Youngstown State Will Cover The Spread

Youngstown had a solid game against Valparaiso. It started with Mitch Davidson. He went 11-19 for 130 yards and a touchdown. While he threw for 57.9 percent passing, it could have been better. Three of his eight incompletions were due to dropped passes. Meanwhile, there was not much of a down-the-field attack for Youngstown State, instead, opting for a more conservative approach. The average depth of the target was just 4.8 yards. Still, he had time to pass. He faced just four quarterback pressures in the game. Three of the times he scrambled for positive yardage, while once he hit the target in the face of pressure, but the pass was dropped.

Meanwhile, the ground attack for Youngstown state was solid. Tyshon King ran for 111 yards on just 11 carries and scored twice. He has two carries over 15 yards and another over 10. He was elusive in the game, forcing six missed tackles, while also having 51 yards after contact. De'Shaun Whatley was good as well. He ran for 58 yards on four carries. What was impressive is only three of his yards were after contact. Whatley had huge holes to run through all game, and he also scored a touchdown.

The defense was also impressive, led by Alex Howard. Howard ended the game with a 90.1 grade from PFF. The reason was that he was everywhere on the field. The junior Middle Lineback had nine tackles on the day, while also having nine stops leading to an offensive failure. He was targeted once in the passing game, and he stuffed the receiver at the line of scrimmage. Even more, he rushed the quarterback well. He has three total pressures while having a sack and a quarterback hit. Overall, Youngstown State had five sacks in the game. They also had 31 stops on just 59 plays, meaning the offense had a success rate of under 50 percent.

Why Ohio State Will Cover The Spread

For Ohio State to cover, it has to start with better quarterback play. Kyle McCord through for 239 yards in the game on 20-33 passes with an interception. In the game, he struggled to hit targets in stride, leading to a few yards after the catch, although he did have one dropped pass in the game. He did have two good deep balls, but he also had two more passes that were turnover-worthy.

Meanwhile, the rushing game for Ohio State started slow but did pick up. TreVeyon Henderson ran 12 times in the game for 47 yards. He did make one missed tackle and had two rushes over ten yards, with his longest being 19. Still, the bulk of his yardage came on just two runs, and he had just 22 yards after first contact. Chip Trayanum ran great though. He was elusive, causing five missed tackles in the game, and also had 45 yards after first contact. He ran eight times for 57 yards in the game.

The biggest issue for Ohio State on offense was the receiving game. Cade Stover did have a solid game, catching five of his seven targets for 98 yards. Still, Marving Harrison Jr., and Emeka Egbuka managed to catch just five of the targets thrown their way for a combined 34 yards.

The defense did shine for the Buckeyes though. They had 13 total quarterback pressures but only managed one sack in the game. Meanwhile, they had three pass breakups, led by Denzel Burke who had two of them. The impressive part was their swarming to the ball. Ohio State had 29 stops for offensive failure on just 55 plays run for Indiana. That was led by Tyleik Williams and Sonny Styles. Styles was able to get from his safety position quickly, especially in the run game, and make solid tackles. All four of his tackles were for stops that resulted in an offensive failure. Tyliek Williams did miss one tackle, but was pivotal in the run defense, making multiple stops behind the line of scrimmage.

Final Youngstown State-Ohio State Prediction & Pick

Ohio State should come out swinging in this game. They dropped in the AP poll after their offense struggled in week one. They cannot have another performance like that. While the defense was good for Youngstown State in their first game, this is a different level of competition. Look for Ohio State to flex their offensive muscle in this one, while the defense continues to dominate a lesser opponent. Take Ohio State and lay the points.

Final Youngstown State-Ohio State Prediction & Pick: Ohio State -41.5 (-110)
