Alex Garland's Civil War has gotten an exciting release update from A24. The move should favor IMAX moviegoers.

Earlier than expected

It was announced that A24 has moved up the release date of Civil War to April 12, 2024. The film will be released nationwide and will be featured in large-format auditoriums like IMAX.

Opening on April 12 means Civil War will avoid Luca Guadagnino's Challengers. The film features the likes of Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor. Moving up allows A24's film to breathe before David Leitch's (Bullet Train) Fall Guy comes out.

The earlier release date also gives Civil War a week before Guy Ritchie's The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Radio Silence's Abigail come out.

The film's synopsis, per A24, bills it as “an adrenaline-fueled thrill ride through a near-future fractured America balanced on the razor's edge.”

Alex Garland is known for his sci-fi films Ex Machina and Annihilation. His latest film, Men, was released in 2022. He has written and directed all four of his films including Civil War.

Civil War features a stellar cast. Kirsten Dunst and her real-life husband Jesse Plemons both star in the film. Cailee Spaeny, fresh off of playing Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola's Priscilla for A24, also stars in it. Nick Offerman, Wagner Moura, and Stephen McKinley Henderson also star in the film.

A24 is a distribution studio that specializes in independent filmmaking. They had a huge 2023, winning several Oscars including its big winner, Everything Everywhere All at Once. Some of their other 2023 films include Beau is Afraid, Priscilla, and Past Lives.
