Alabama starting quarterback Bryce Young is set for the second major road test of his season this Saturday when he will clash with Texas A&M.

Young is earning early acclaim to be the favorite for the 2021 Heisman Trophy. Not only has he so far led Alabama's astounding 45.6 points per game offense, but he has also recorded 17 passing touchdowns this season.

Ahead of this SEC showdown, Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher offered his early takeaways of the sophomore quarterback, where he highlighted just how versatile of a passer the Alabama star has become.

“Bryce is a very polished young man,” Fisher said during Wednesday's SEC Coaches Teleconference. “He’s very athletic. He can create plays with his feet, but he’s a very accurate thrower. He processes information very well and can get the ball out at different angles with his hand and can do it with his body in different positions.

“His hand talent and his overall ability is really remarkable, in my opinion.”

Young spent the entirety of the last season as the backup quarterback to starter Mac Jones. He did come into the ongoing campaign with much pressure and plenty of expectations, especially following Jones' heroics in leading Alabama to a perfect 13-0 season and a national title over the 2020 campaign.

Fisher had to gameplan against Jones last year and from his early impressions of Young, he sees a stark difference between the two and their preferred style of play as quarterbacks.

“I think Mac had more experience, he’s been in the system longer, but Mac's not as athletic as Bryce,” Fisher said. “He’s a little bigger guy, stands in the pocket a lot more, doesn’t have the mobility that Bryce has.

“They’re just two different styles. I mean, it’s hard to compare because you’re comparing two different styles of players. Both are very intelligent, both are very accurate, both are very efficient, so at the end of the day, they’re similar in those regards. But their styles, the way they go about it—Bryce can sit in the pocket and make those throws. Mac’s a little bigger-body guy, seeing over things and doing things, but Bryce can create so many plays with his legs and what he does to keep plays alive. But both excellent players, just different styles.”

Jones had grand success last season against the Aggies, as he threw for four passing touchdowns in a key 52-24 win. Now, all eyes will be on how Young will perform against a Texas A&M defense that currently ranks fourth in the FBS in points per game allowed with a 12.6 average.
