A Native American costume designer on Killers of the Flower Moon has filed a lawsuit against the film's lead costume designer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Kristi Marie Hoffman has accused the studio for excluding her from being considered for awards, alleging that this action was retaliation when she complained about discrimination.

In the lawsuit Hoffman filed at the Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, she claimed that she had done “most of the research and costume design for the film.” However, her contributions ended up being “completely ignored.”

Apple Studios hasn't responded to THR's request for comment.

Killers of the Flower Moon costume drama

Killers of the Flower moon received 10 Academy Award nominations, seven from the Golden Globe Awards and three from the SAG Awards. The film was also nominated by the Costume Designers Guild for excellence in a period film. The guild is also named in the suit.

In the complaint, Hoffman said she was discriminated against because her work on the movie was discredited during the promotion of the film.

At the announcement of the Costume Designers Guild Award nominations, Hoffman was part of the names along with lead costume designer Jacqueline West, listed as the first assistant costume designer, the suit claimed. She said that West requested that the notation be removed.

Hoffman challenged the decision and the guild decided that the removal was “improper.” She added that when the film was “nominated for an Oscar for its costume design, which Defendants further excluded Hoffman.”

She let West, her guild and Apple  know about the alleged misconduct, and she claimed that her complaints were ignored. Hoffman then took her complaint to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission with allegations for discrimination. This was settled in 2022.

She further stated the the costume design work was tagged as West's and consultant Julie O'Keefe's. However, Hoffman claimed that she was responsible for the design of Leonardo DiCaprio's jacket in the movie, which she said has “garnered much praise for its authenticity and originality.”

The lawsuit names West and the Costume Designers Guild for breach of contract, false advertising, retaliation, and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. Hoffman is seeking damages as well as an injunction to block the people named in the suit from downplaying the contributions she has done for the movie.

While Killers of the Flower Moon received numerous nominations, it was virtually shut out from the Oscars, Golden Globes and SAG, since only Lily Gladstone won as best actress at the Globes and SAG.
