The Los Angeles Chargers have had a monster offseason as they hope to make the playoffs in 2022. Most teams tend to focus on stacking the offense around an elite quarterback, however, Brandon Staley decided to do the same thing on the defensive side of the ball instead. Sounds like Derwin James was on Staley's mind throughout free agency.

According to PFF, Brandon Staley claims he added lethal weapons in Khalil Mack and JC Jackson to build the defense around Derwin James. Normally this is a strategy seen to help out the quarterback. Even so, Staley decided to zag while the rest of the league zigs. For that reason, the Chargers have one of the best defenses in the league on paper.

This is a fantastic approach from a head coach. If the Chargers take over as the top team in the NFL, then we could see other franchises follow this strategy. Similar to the NBA, the NFL is a copycat league. Whatever is successful, other teams are bound to follow suit. Los Angeles has put themselves in a great situation, even though the rest of the AFC is completely loaded as well.

We'll see how it plays out for LA. The defense is stacked beyond belief and the offense will be just fine with Justin Herbert leading the way. It's insane how much talent is on this roster and we still have the 2o22 NFL Draft around the corner. The Chargers can set themselves apart from the competition, as they aim to be one of the league's best teams next year.
