Running back Melvin Gordon wants to be paid; the Los Angeles Chargers don't want to give him with what he believes is fair value. In turn, setting up a contractual dispute without a clear ending on the horizon. The only one being, as Gordon said publicly is if the Chargers “pay me or trade me.” Now, leaks, via ESPN's Josina Anderson tells us that Gordon's agent, Demarius Bilbo, demanded a trade last week after the Chargers persisted on a $10 million per year extension.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport broke down the situation, and shed light on it, on Inside Training Camp Live, saying,

We've talked about this not just for several weeks but going back more than a month when it became clear Melvin Gordon would hold out, that if he did not believe the Chargers were going to pay him his market value that he would want to be traded The team has been informed of that, and I talked of that a couple times.

They're not going to trade him. They told his agent they are not going to trade him, so they are essentially going to keep doing what they are doing — focus on the guys that are there. Melvin Gordon is by himself in Florida training. They tried hard to make a deal several times. I know he's going to want more than the roughly $10 million per year offer that they made him. But until they get together and do some sort of deal, he's going to continue to stay away.

It's unclear how this situation finishes out. Running backs are devalued position, but Gordon ranks amongst the best in the NFL, as indicated by two Pro Bowl appearances in three seasons. He wants to be paid like that after finishing out his team-friendly rookie contract and is willing to hold out to do so. It's clear, however, that if traded, he will have a market as some teams could use service.
