After years of trying to get it off the ground, the Community movie has seemed ready to get filming underway with most of the series original cast barring a few notable omissions such as Chevy Chase. The one thing many fans believed has held up the start of production is the schedule of one of the series most popular and busiest stars, who has since shot back at these rumors.

Donald Glover addressed these rumors while sitting down with Deadline to discuss his new Amazon Prime series Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and if he had been told any updates about the Community film's status. He could not provide any new information beyond just some general teases and humorously defended himself, insisting the most recent delays were not due to his own busy schedule.

“It's happening but I don’t know when. I swear, it's happening,” Glover said. “Everybody is hating on me on the internet and it's not me! They’re like, ‘We know that you’re the reason.' Maybe I was last year — maybe — but not this time.”

The film was reportedly set to begin production in 2023, but was delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that dominated Hollywood for a large part of the year.

“If it makes you nervous – you're doing it right.”

Even before Community's original TV run ended, it was clear Donald Glover's star was on the rise and the actor was poised to break out in a big way. It didn't take long on the film side as Glover secured notable supporting roles in films like The Martian and Spider-Man: Homecoming in quick fashion.

His biggest at the time, though, was as young Lando Calrissian in 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story, which proved so popular Lucasfilm began development of a Disney Plus series starring Glover's Lando. The series was pivoted into a feature film in 2023, with Glover still attached to star and helping develop its narrative.

Things didn't slow down on the television side for Glover, either, with his hit FX series Atlanta premiering in 2016. Inspired by his own experiences growing up in Atlanta, Glover created, starred, and executive produced the series' four season run from 2016 to 2022 and is now regarded as one of the best shows of the 2010s.

Along with all his film and TV pursuits, Glover enjoyed a very successful career as musician under the stage name Childish Gambino. He released three albums under the Childish Gambino name before retiring it in 2017, but has continued to produce music and released his fourth album in 2020 to critical acclaim.

Given how busy Glover has kept himself since Community ended its original run in 2014, it is understandable why some fans would think that his scheduled could play a part in holding up the start of the Community film's production. However, Glover has also show himself to be fairly malleable and able to juggle multiple high-profile projects at once, which others could argue would be a positive in trying to get the movie rolling.
