The BAFTA TV Awards Sunday Night honored Happy Valley and Top Boy with the top wins at London's Royal Festival Hall, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Sarah Lancashire won the leading actress award in the Yorkshire-based police thriller Happy Valley. Timothy Spall of The Sixth Commandment beat Succession's Brian Cox for Leading Actor. The Sixth Commandment also won another BAFTA for best limited drama.
Happy Valley, which ran for three seasons, chronicles the story of police Sgt. Catherine Cawood (Lancashire) as she deals with the tragic events involving her daughter, then being implicated in a crime and finally, retirement.
Jasmine Johnson of drug-gang drama Top Boy won the best supporting actress trophy. The series also won best drama.
Top Boy was written and created by Ronan Bennett. The series follows the story of two drug dealers Dushane and Sully, in the fictional Summerhouse estate of the London Borough of Hackney, as they deal with drug dealing and gang violence in London.
While Cox may have lost the lead actor prize, Matthew Macfadyen was able to redeem Jesse Armstrong's massively popular comedy by winning best supporting actor for Succession. Such Brave Girls won best scripted comedy.
Leading favorites The Crown and Black Mirror lost out on the awards despite racking up eight and seven, respectively, nominations. And in a shocking twist, French fictionalized biopic Class Act won best international show over contenders Succession and The Bear.
Out of 44 nominees in the performance categories, 17 were first timers like David Tennant for Good Omens, Hannah Waddingham for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, Harriet Walters of Succession, Bella Ramsey of The Last of Us and Elizabeth Debicki of The Crown.
The BAFTA TV Awards was hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Tangnathan. The two also won best comedy entertainment from Rob & Romesh vs Danielle Lux, Murray Boland, Jack Shillaker, Bill Righton, David Taylor, Graham Proud.
Jeff Goldblum, Lashan Lynch, Martin Freeman, Aidan Turner, and Baby Reindeer duo Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning were among the presenters.
