The MCU‘s upcoming Fantastic Four movie is being billed as a “period piece” and has gotten a canon update from Kevin Feige. It will also begin filming soon.
During an appearance on the Official Marvel Podcast, Feige discussed Fantastic Four. He first revealed that the movie will commence shooting “at the end of July” after San Diego Comic-Con. Feige then confirmed that the movie is a period piece and talked about what universe it takes place in.
“Yes, yes, very much so. It is a period [piece],” Feige said. “And there was another piece of art we released with Johnny Storm flying in the air and making a 4 symbol and there was a cityscape in the corner of that image. There were a lot of smart people who noticed that that cityscape didn't look exactly like the New York that we know or the New York that existed in the '60s in our world.
“Those are smart observations, I'll say,” Feige added.
This also seemingly confirms that the Fantastic Four movie will not take place in the current MCU canon. Perhaps the multiverse will eventually transport them to the 616 universe.
The Fantastic Four
The forthcoming Fantastic Four movie is the first swing by the MCU at Marvel's First Family. Previously, Fox had attempted two iterations of the team.
First was Tim Story's two movies in 2005 and 2007. Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, and future MCU star Chris Evans starred as the Fantastic Four.
In 2015, Fox attempted to reboot the franchise with a new cast. Josh Trank co-wrote and directed a movie with Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell starring as the team. The movie flopped, though, and a follow-up was never made.

Matt Shakman will now direct the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. He previously directed all of the episodes of the WandaVision series. Shakman is known for his work in TV directing episodes of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Fargo, Game of Thrones, and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
In early 2024, Disney and Marvel Studios unveiled the Fantastic Four cast. Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian), Vanessa Kirby (Hobbs and Shaw), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear), and Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) will star in it.
Following that news, Ralph Ineson was revealed as Galactus. Julia Garner will play the Silver Surfer. Additionally, John Malkovich, Paul Walter Hauser, and Natasha Lyonne will star in the movie.
The MCU's Phase Six
The Fantastic Four will kick off the MCU's Phase Six. However, it is the third of four movies coming out in 2025. Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts will come out in February and May 2024, respectively.
After Fantastic Four, Blade will follow in November 2025. Avengers 5 and Secret Wars will subsequently follow. In 2024, the MCU only has one movie slated for release — Deadpool and Wolverine.
