The Martin Scorsese-Marvel debate will never end. One of the producers of Loki weighed in on Scorsese's comments calling MCU and comic book movies a “danger” to culture.
The comments in question
In a recent GQ profile, Scorsese said the following about comic book movies: “The danger there is what it's doing to our culture. Because there are going to be generations now that think movies are those — that's what movies are.”
“They already think that,” he added. “Which means that we have to then fight back stronger. And it's got to come from the grassroots level.”
In an interview with Geeks of Color, Loki Season 2 producer Kevin R. Wright had a response to Scorsese's comments. “I think with Loki, we just wanted to make a great story and a great show, I think that this is something that all of the filmmakers involved, and including Tom Hiddleston, and I think it comes through in every frame of this — it's being built with a lot of love and care and an eye for the cinematic.”
“Any of these shows, any of these movies, anything in this world — they're about making a character-focused story that audiences can connect with. Sometimes we succeed at that, sometimes we don't [laughs],” he added.
“But I think something like this show, I would challenge anyone watching to say that it's not cinematic and it's not built with the highest craftsmanship and care,” he said. “And that's something and any producers within Marvel Studios, we should be aiming for.”
Loki Season 2 is currently airing on Disney+. Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese's latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon, just came out.
