The trailer drop of Moana 2 has shattered a Disney trailer viewership record thanks to its 178 million views. It beat out the likes of fellow sequels Inside Out 2 and Frozen 2.
It is being reported that the Moana 2 trailer racked in 178 million views in its first 24 hours. That became Disney's most-watched trailer for an animated film — and it's not even close.
In the same timeframe, Inside Out 2, which comes out in June 2024, logged 157 million views and Frozen 2 had 116 million views. The views being considered are taken from all social media platforms. These include TikTok, X, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and YouTube.
Inside Out 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the 2015 film, Inside Out. The film was a box office hit, grossing over $850 million worldwide. It also won Best Animated Feature at the Oscars in 2016.
Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Diane Lane, and Kyle MacLachlan reprise their roles from the first film in the sequel. However, Mindy Kaling and Bill Hader were replaced by Liza Lapira and Tony Hale, respectively. Ayo Edebiri, Maya Hawke, Paul Walter Hauser, and Adéle Exarchopoulos join the cast as new characters.
Frozen 2 is the sequel to 2013's Frozen, which made over $1.2 billion at the box office. The film won two Oscars — Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (for “Let It Go”).
The sequel was similarly successful, grossing nearly $1.5 billion worldwide during its theatrical run. Despite being nominated for Best Original Song, the film missed out and lost to “(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again” from the Elton John biopic Rocketman.
What is Moana 2 about?
Moana 2 comes eight years after its predecessor. The first film starred Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson as the title character and Maui, respectively. It was a modest hit, grossing over $680 million worldwide at the box office. The duo of John Musker and Ron Clements directed the film based on a script from Jared Bush.
Article Continues BelowThe sequel, which was originally conceived as a Disney+ series, continues the story of Moana. In the sequel, she embarks on a journey across Oceania after receiving a call from the wayfinding ancestors. She isn't alone and enlists the help of Maui and Heihei (Alan Tudyk) for her adventure.
Auili'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson will return for the sequel. Temuera Morrison, Nicola Scherzinger, and Alan Tudyk will also return and reprise their respective role.
Disney will release Moana 2 in November 2024. The trio of David G. Derrick, Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller will make their feature directorial debuts with the film. Christina Chen and Yvett Merino will produce the film.
A big loss for the sequel is Lin-Manuel Miranda, known for creating Hamilton. He wrote the songs for the first film but will not return for the sequel. In his place are the returning Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa'i. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear will also compose songs for the sequel.
The Moana franchise will continue beyond the sequel film. Disney will be making a live-action remake of the first film with Johnson returning. Thomas Kail, who directed Miranda's Broadway musicals In the Heights and Hamilton, will direct the live-action remake.
Moana 2 will be released on November 27.
