Disney has dropped the first trailer for Moana 2 and it features the returns of the title character (Auli'i Cravalho) and Maui (Dwayne Johnson). The sequel comes over eight years after the first film.

The trailer opens with a shot on the beach. Two shells are washed up on the beach before a crab emerges from one. Moana then appears and replaces the shell with a nicer one as she blows into the one she picked up.

It then shows her being sent off by her family and on a new adventure. As of the end of the first film, Moana is chief and wayfinder.

“This is a call from the ancestors,” she says in a voiceover. “We need to sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean.”

Breathtaking animals — including huge whales — are shown towards the end of the trailer. That promises some amazing set pieces are in store.

At the very of the trailer, Maui emerges and holds Heihei and Pau. “Boat snack!” he exclaims as he catches Heihei before Pau falls into his other arm. “Boat snack upgrade! Bacon and eggs! Why didn't you bring the pig last time?”

Per Disney's Moana 2 trailer on YouTube, the film “reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced.”

David Derrick Jr. wrote and directed the film, taking over for John Musker and Ron Clements (who directed the first film). Derrick Jr. is making his directorial debut with the film. Osnat Shurer is producing it.

Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa'i are also returning to do the music for the sequel. Lin-Manuel Miranda is not returning despite writing the songs for the previous film. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear will also be featured on the soundtrack.

Outside of Cravalho and Johnson, Alan Tudyk will also star in the film. He voiced Heihei in the first film as well.

What is Moana?

Disney released Moana in 2016. Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, and Nicole Scherzinger starred alongside Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, and Tudyk.

It follows the title character who is chosen by the ocean to return a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti. She takes Maui along for the adventure.

After premiering at the 2016 AFI Fest, Disney released the film theatrically a little over a week later. The film was the second Disney animated film released in 2016 after Zootopia, which grossed over $1 billion at the box office.

Moana was a box office hit in its own right. It didn't make $1 billion like Zootopia, but it did gross over $640 million worldwide.

A sequel is now coming over eight years later. In addition to the animated sequel, Disney is making a live-action remake of the film. Johnson will return as Maui in the film.

Moana 2 will be released on November 27.
