The New York Giants are down bad right now. Giants owner John Mara was booed during Eli Manning's jersey retirement ceremony, and then New York suffered a late loss to the Atlanta Falcons to drop to 0-3 on the season. Making matters worse is star linebacker Blake Martinez suffering a torn ACL that ends his season, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Martinez sustained the injury on the opening drive of the 17-14 loss to Atlanta. There was no contact on the injury as he ran to the sideline in an attempt to make a tackle. The linebacker needed assistance off the field and immediately walked to the locker room.

This is a brutal blow for New York. Martinez is a Giants captain and their leading tackler. He came to New York in 2020 after four productive seasons with the Green Bay Packers and made an impact, racking up 151 combined tackles and three sacks. Because of this injury, his four-year streak of notching at least 140 combined tackles will unfortunately come to an end.

Martinez wasn't the only key Giants player to suffer an injury on Sunday. New York also lost wide receivers Darius Slayton and Sterling Shepard, and ESPN's Jordan Raanan says Shepard is likely going to miss some time.

This has been a truly disastrous start to the 2021 season for the Giants, who were hoping to take a step forward with Daniel Jones in his third campaign. Jones has been okay, but he hasn't been good enough to get any wins. It's not all his fault, of course, as it's always a team effort when you lose the first three games of a season. There are still 14 games to go, so New York better get its act together soon if this isn't going to be another lost year.
