The New York Giants season is coming to a close without a playoff berth or winning record once again. The Giants are 4-12 this season and finish up this Sunday at home against the Washington Football Team. There have been numerous reports that head coach Joe Judge is on the “hot seat” and his job security is in jeopardy. However, if one looks deeper, there are bigger issues at play with the once proud franchise.
As Warren Sharp points out, the Giants are the only team in the NFL over the last five years to not have a winning record at any point, or any season.
Jim Judge is finishing up his 2nd season as New York Giants head coach. But clearly, this organization has had issues that existed before him. From 1997 to 2015, the Giants had only two head coaches; Jim Fassel for seven years and Tom Coughlin for 12 years. That's stability.
Since 2016, the Giants have gone through Ben McAdoo, Steve Spagnuolo, Pat Shurmur and now Joe Judge. Judge was not there when the Giants drafted Daniel Jones with the 6th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. This league has become a league of quarterbacks. Either you have one or you don't. The writing is on the wall with Jones. The Giants do not have their future quarterback.
Judge's roots as an assistant coach were in defense and special teams. He was the Linebackers Coach at Southern in 2008 before taking over the role as special teams coordinator at Alabama the following year. The Giants defense and special teams have not been the problem. Their offense is putrid and hard to watch.
You can probably say that Judge didn't bring the right staff on to run the offense, but you cannot put all of the team's failures at his feet.
