New York Giants GM Joe Schoen knows there's a lot of work to be done in order to get the team back into the playoffs. After being hired to replace Dave Gettleman in New York, Schoen is getting to work at improving the Giants' cap situation. As it stands, the team is currently projected to be over the cap prior to signing any free agents or draft picks, and Schoen admitted that he may have to make some “tough decisions” in order to help alleviate the team's financial situation.

Via the NY Post, Schoen said, “First off, we have to get underneath [the cap], we have to make some tough decisions here in the near future just to get in a place where we can sign draft picks and be below the cap.”

While Schoen admitted there were some changes looming, he didn't identify any individual contract he was looking to get off the books, or potentially restructure. The Giants GM has previously stated his intentions to keep Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley on the roster, and it seems he doubled down on that sentiment with his latest comments.

“I don’t want to purge the roster, because we still want to find out what Daniel Jones can do, we want to find out what Saquon can do. We got some good pieces on defense. The fine balance, the fine line is cutting players that can really help you win but you also got to get under the salary cap, then you’re gonna have the draft picks.”

Despite Schoen revealing he has some tough decisions to make, the GM is insistent that he is not going to purge the roster. Instead, he's hoping he can free up some money while keeping the Giants' cornerstones in place.

After a 4-13 campaign in 2021, Schoen is hoping to see some significant improvements in 2022. With Jones and Barkley seemingly locked in for next year, Schoen will explore other options to open up some cap space for the Giants to become players in free agency.
