Saquon Barkley's future with the New York Giants remain in limbo. While new general manager Joe Schoen recently fueled trade speculations, latest reports claim that it doesn't look like the exec has any interest in parting ways with the running back.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Giants have a “very significant” asking price for any trade involving Barkley, leading one assistant GM to saying that he doesn't “get the sense they actually want to trade him.”
“To me, this is just postering, but Joe [Schoen] would want a 1,” the assistant GM furthered.
It remains to be seen what the Giants really plan to do with Saquon Barkley. After all, Joe Schoen himself didn't really say he would trade the 25-year-old and only shared that he is “open to everything”–even moving a promising player that has struggled over the last couple of years.
“Like whether it’s trading player for player; I’ll listen to anybody. If it’s trading a couple players — I’m not going to say the entire roster, [that] we’re open for business on the entire roster. But if anyone is going to call and they’re interested in any of our players. I’m certainly going to listen,”Schoen said recently.
“Again, we’re in a situation where unfortunately we have to get under the salary cap. We’re not in very good salary-cap health. Again, I’m not going to say yes to every deal, but I’m definitely going to listen and be open to the situations that are best for the New York Giants.”
Perhaps he is still gauging the market and checking the most he can get if he deals Barkley away? Who knows, but it doesn't look like fans will get any clarity soon as the Giants navigate their transformation under a new regime.
As for Barkley, he could certainly use a fresh start after failing to live up to the expectations he set in his rookie season. However, he and his fans will have to wait until free agency starts to see what moves the team will make and whether he has a future in New York or not.
