Matt Patricia is one of the hottest names in the head coaching market. The New England Patriots defensive coordinator is likely to leave the team this offseason and has already been strongly linked with the Detriot Lions' head coaching job.
But according to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, it seems that “all signs” are pointing to Patricia being the man the New York Giants go after.
The Daily News has learned that all signs are pointing to Matt Patricia, the New England Patriots defensive coordinator with a degree in aeronautical engineering, as the man the Giants will hire to point Big Blue back in the right direction.
While Leonard did not get into too many specifics as to which signs were pointing to Patricia heading to the Big Apple, he did point out that Patricia would prefer to go to the Giants over the Lions. Peter King of MMQB.com also says Patricia would lean toward New York over Detroit if given a choice.
Leonard believes that after a slew of offense-first head coaches, Patricia is just the type of defense-first coach the Giants need to get back to their glory days. He also thinks Patricia and new general manager Dave Gettleman would be on the same page in terms of putting that strong defensive team together.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has also been linked with the Giants job. But if Belichick keeps his word and does stay on with the Patriots next season, getting one of his proteges would probably be the next best thing for the Giants.
