When the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Clemson superstar quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, everyone thought he would come in and put the franchise back on the map. No one necessarily thought that would happen in year one, but what has happened through three games this season was not expected either. Lawrence has looked very rough in his first three career appearances.
Thus far in his three-game NFL career, Lawrence has completed 54.2 percent of his pass attempts for 669 yards, five touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He has also picked up 46 yards on the ground for the Jaguars.
Lawrence has been accustomed to winning at every single level. Seeing him struggle like this was certainly not the expectation of most fans. However, this is a small sample size for a rookie quarterback.
One thing that has been surprising has been the lack of good decision-making from Lawrence. He has always been though highly of for his high football IQ. That has not been on full display through three games with the Jaguars.
All of that being said, let's dive in and take a look at whether or not it's time for the Jaguars and their fans to panic about the start that Lawrence has had this season.
The Good
We're going to be honest, there hasn't been a ton of good through three games for Lawrence. But, there are a few things that can be pointed out.
First and foremost, Lawrence has not seemed to allow his rough start to get to him. He has always had elite level composure, which is going to be important for him with all of the hype and expectations. While the fans were expecting to see Lawrence come out looking like a superstar immediately, that simply wasn't a reasonable expectation.
Secondly, Lawrence has made some good throws and has found the end zone with five of those passes. He has not been completely bad, unlike another fellow rookie quarterback in the AFC. Lawrence has also displayed great leadership for the Jaguars, which is a very important thing to see from a rookie quarterback.
While it is difficult to find many major good things from Lawrence's first three NFL games, there are a few things to note.
The Bad
Obviously, the most concerning part of Lawrence's start has been his turnover numbers. Not only has Lawrence thrown seven interceptions, most of them have been very bad turnovers. Take a look at this interception, which was very unlike Lawrence.

Granted, the play looked rough from the start, and not all of that can be placed on the shoulders of Lawrence. But, the throw in and of itself was an absolutely awful throw. No quarterback is going to be able to make that kind of pass against any NFL defense.
Next up, we touched on Lawrence's decision-making earlier. Throughout his entire career up to these past three games, Lawrence has never had issues taking care of the football, and a lot of that has to do with his knowledge of the game, ability to read defenses, and minimizing risks.
So far this season, Lawrence seems to have regressed in all of those facets of the game. That could be pinned on being a rookie quarterback in the NFL going up against much more athletic and more complex defenses. Or, is it possible that Lawrence just doesn't have the arm to be a superstar at this level?
Not only has Lawrence turned the football over, he isn't finding a way to complete a high percentage of his passes. Lawrence is working with a decent wide receiver room, including Laviska Shenault Jr., Marvin Jones Jr., and DJ Chark Jr. Fans would and should be expecting more from Lawrence with those weapons.
The Conclusion
Looking at the list of goods and bads, the panic is understandable from fans. However, it is way too early to panic too much about Trevor Lawrence.
He has had success throughout his entire football career for a reason. It can be extremely difficult to transition into the NFL and that is exactly what Lawrence is finding out the hard way. As his career moves forward, he will continue figuring things out.
What does all of this really mean? Quite simply, the Jaguars were never going to be a super competitive team simply because they brought in a No. 1 overall pick to be their new quarterback. There are so many areas that the team still has left to improve in the future.
Lawrence absolutely needs to begin playing better. Getting off to a slow start is disappointing, but there is zero need to go full panic mode over it.
