It looks like the Jacksonville Jaguars could potentially bring back a familiar face to fill in their head coaching role after a disastrous season with Urban Meyer at the helm.

Per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Buccaneers offensive coordinator and former first-round pick by the Jaguars Byron Leftwich is nearing a deal to become the team's next HC:

However, Adam Schefter claims that Jacksonville is still considering other candidates as well:

Jaguars owner Shad Khan and GM Trent Baalke met with Leftwich on Tuesday and are evidently moving in the right direction in hiring him. Jacksonville selected him seventh overall in 2003 and he went on to play 46 games for the team at quarterback.

Leftwich has been the OC for the Bucs since 2019 and had been previously praised by Tom Brady earlier in the season for his ability to get the best out of everyone around him. Leftwich also served as the OC and quarterbacks coach for the Arizona Cardinals when Bruce Arians was in charge.

This could be a phenomenal hire for the Jaguars in terms of Trevor Lawrence's development. Leftwich has played at a high level in the NFL and brings a lot of expertise to the table which should prove to be valuable for the former first overall pick, who certainly struggled in his rookie year.

If an agreement is reached with the Jaguars, this will be Byron Leftwich's first head coaching job.
