Tyler Eifert chose to test free agency this offseason and he decided to continue his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Following his decision, Eifert admitted that Jay Gruden was the “big factor” in him signing with the Jaguars.
While speaking to the media on a video conference call, Eifert, via the team's official website, said that Gruden's presence was a reason why he chose Jacksonville:
“It was a big factor … We get along great, and I have a good understanding for the offense that he runs — and a good feel for it.”
Eifert, a first-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2013 NFL Draft, has been plagued by various injuries over the course of his career. Altogether, in his seven seasons with the Bengals, Eifert was sidelined for 53 games due to injuries.
However, for the first time in his career, Eifert was able to play in all 16 games in 2019. Despite having a limited role, the Notre Dame product notched 43 receptions for 436 yards and three touchdowns.
After his time in Cincinnati came to a close, it was time for Eifert to find a new place to call home. While considering other teams, the seven-year veteran chose to join the Jaguars.
As he mentioned multiple times, Gruden's presence made the ultimate difference in his decision. Of course, Eifert has previous experience with Gruden, who served as the Bengals offensive coordinator from 2011 to 2014.
Even though he could have signed with another team, Eifert's familiarity with Gruden led to him choosing Jacksonville.
