The New York Mets have been arguably the biggest surprise in baseball this year. Entering Tuesday night, the Mets were a shocking 38-19. That's the best record in the National League. Much of the team's success is due to the re-emergence of slugger Pete Alonso.

On Tuesday, the Mets got a massive scare.

In the top of the 2nd inning and the Mets trailing 1-0 to the San Diego Padres, Alonso took a pitch off of his right hand from Yu Darvish.

Alonso immediately hit the ground, writhing in pain. After a few moments, he stood up as Mets manager Buck Showalter and the trainer came out to look at him. He was helped to the bench and removed from the game.

Mets' JD Davis immediately replaced Alonso as a pinch runner. Surely, the New York superstar will be headed for x-rays Tuesday night.

After a relatively subpar season from Alonso in 2021, he has completely turned it around in 2022. The Mets first baseman has 16 home runs, 54 RBI and 38 runs scored. Plus, he is hitting a career-high .282 thus far this season. He is easily one of the front runners for National League MVP after the first third of the season.

An extensive absence would be a huge blow to a Mets team with championship aspirations. Although an injury to Alonso might not cost them the NL East, which they lead by 8.5 games, home-field advantage could be in play. The Los Angeles Dodgers were only a game and a half behind New York entering Tuesday's game in San Diego.
