The San Diego Padres are expected to be buyers ahead of this year's MLB trade deadline. Padres general manager A.J. Preller reportedly already has early plans for just how he aims to bolster the team heading into the stretch run of the season.

According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the Padres will likely be looking to add a hitter. Heyman further added that such a player “most likely” will be an outfielder.

Heyman also brought up New York Yankees outfielder Joey Gallo, who San Diego was heavily linked with over the offseason. However, he noted that no team is slated to “offer much” for him at the moment, as one MLB executive labeled the veteran outfielder as “untradeable.”

After a roller-coaster start to the 2022 campaign, the Padres offense has begun to turn the tide as of late. Manny Machado and company boast a wRC+ of 122 in June, which ranks at second in the National League behind the Atlanta Braves (135).

More so, multiple Padres hitters have turned their campaigns around in June. Among them, outfielder Jurickson Profar has posted a .289 batting average to go along with 15 RBI recorded in 23 games played so far this month.

Multiple notable outfielders are expected to hit the trade market in the coming weeks. Heyman listed the likes of Arizona Diamondbacks’ David Peralta and Chicago Cubs’ Ian Happ as being among the players who are on par to be available later in the season.

The Padres are currently in the midst of a four-game home series with the Philadelphia Phillies. They sit at a mere one game back of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West standings.
