Last night, Sam Amick of USA TODAY Sports released an excellent piece that featured an in-depth look into Kevin Durant‘s decision to join the Warriors, from KD's own point of view.

He discussed his relationship with Russell Westbrook, his pain after hurting the Oklahoma City Thunder faithful, and his thoughts on the criticism coming from the likes of Charles Barkley and Reggie Miller.

In the immediate aftermath of the news breaking that Durant had chosen Golden State, the uproar on social media and around the country was palpable. Everybody seemed to express an opinion, and the vast majority outside of the Bay Area were negative.

Instead of dealing with the madness head-on, Durant took a similar route that many teenagers and young adults take to cope with their problems: he played video games.

From Amick:

What do you do when you know there’s a storm coming?

You stay inside – and play video games.

That was Durant after his decision on July 4, when he took shelter from the widespread criticism in that rented house in the Hamptons where his family, friends and associates had stayed after his meetings with six teams.

“I didn't leave my bed, because I was like, ‘Man, if I walk outside somebody might just try to hit me with their car or say anything negative to me,’” Durant said. “I just stayed in. I was trying to process it all. I wanted to be around family, and positive support. It felt different.

Yet after two straight days of Xbox action with his younger brother, Rayvonne, Durant emerged to learn that the sun was still shining.

Sounds like a relaxing couple of days. However, now that he's out in front of the media and the rest of the world with Team USA, it's going to be much more difficult to escape the noise and the condemnation from his detractors.
