Sheppard replaced long-time Wizards executive Ernie Grunfeld in April and had been operating as Washington's lead decision-maker through the offseason, including the NBA draft and free agency period with the “interim” label on his GM name tag. Team owner Ted Leonsis tabbed Sheppard for the full-time role on Friday.
Beal has been with the organization since he was selected by the Wizards with the third overall pick in the 2012 draft. The University of Florida product has gone on to reach two All-Star games and help lead D.C., alongside All-Star John Wall, to the postseason in four years in his seven-year tenure. The Wizards have not been able to escape the Eastern Conference's second round under former head coach Randy Wittman and current coach Scott Brooks, however.
Wall appears to be sidelined for the indefinite future, nevertheless, due to an Achilles tendon rupture suffered while recovering from heel surgery last January. Thus, the Wizards should be in rebuilding mode, explaining Beal's reluctance to sign an extension with the team. He was rumored as a possible moving star in the offseason but no trade has come to fruition.
Bradley Beal averaged last season a career-best 25.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists in 36.9 minutes per game last season, shooting 47.5% from the field, 35.1% from behind the 3-point line, and 80.8% from the free throw line.
