Finally under a new brain trust, the New York Giants have put the pieces in place to finally start fresh. Heading into the 2022 NFL offseason, their plan of tackling their team needs through free agency will define this team for many seasons to come.

Joe Schoen has taken over personnel moves for the franchise, and the former Buffalo front-office member comes highly regarded, which should help give the team faith in him as he tries to right the ship that was basically sunk by Dave Gettleman. Questions surrounding the futures of Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, and others will be hot topics of the offseason, but some answers likely will be provided through their free agent targets.

New York Giants Free Agent Targets for 2022 NFL Offseason

3. Trent Brown – RT

Building up the trenches is exactly how a struggling team can find its identity again, and with needing to build a better pocket for the team’s QB and creating running lanes for Barkley, adding a stalwart at tackle like Trent Brown would be a big step towards accomplishing that.

Yes, the last time the Giants went the route of adding a high-priced veteran tackle from the New England Patriots, it resulted in bringing Nate Solder and his albatross to town. But with Solder a free agent and Brown five years younger, he looks to be a solid investment for this team.

2. Leighton Vander Esch – LB

Poaching an oft-injured insider linebacker from a divisional rival certainly has its pros and cons, but with the injury-prone tag attached to Leighton Vander Esch, it may drive his price tag down to be a reasonable one for the Giants to meet in free agency.

This NFL offseason may not see a ton of movement by the Dallas Cowboys, as their cap sheet is already stuffed to its limits, so bringing back Vander Esch is not seen as a likely list item for them to accomplish in free agency. Pairing Vander Esch alongside Blake Martinez (who has a large contract and may need to be reworked) would help firm up the LB position and create a front seven that may be one of the ten best in the NFL.

1. Quandre Diggs – SS

A team that is one year away from being two years away has a bit of leeway when it comes to making free agent signings, and with Quandre Diggs coming off of a gnarly broken fibula and dislocated ankle injury.

The former Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks’ safety has enjoyed a strong seven-year career at this point, and would be a nice addition to a secondary devoid of any talent at strong safety. Making a return from an injury of that regard certainly has no guarantees attached to it, but the 29-year-old looks to have plenty left in the tank, and if the Giants can get him on an incentive-driven deal, they could maximize his value while adding some much-needed production to the back-end of their defensive secondary.
