The Denver Broncos want to make some drastic changes during this NFL offseason after a disappointing 2017 campaign in which the team missed the playoffs for the second straight season. The quarterback position is one of the team's biggest weaknesses moving forward with general manager John Elway seemingly determined to upgrade the position in NFL free agency.

Pending free agent Kirk Cousins is expected to be the Broncos' top target in free agency. Cousins will have a number of suitors with the Minnesota Vikings potentially being the favorite to sign him. Denver has a decent shot at trying to convince Cousins to sign, but Minnesota might have the edge.

In the event Cousins signs elsewhere, the Broncos appear to have a backup plan that involves veteran journeyman, Case Keenum, according to Mike Klis of 9news.com.

Jim, the Broncos are interested in Keenum. I’m not sure he’s Plan B. He might be, but from what I understand, the Broncos had not settled on Plan B as of a few days ago. There’s still time. The market’s negotiating window opens Monday. The market opens next Wednesday. The Broncos want Cousins. If they don’t get him, I personally think Keenum is the second-best option. He’s smart, poised, accurate. But because he doesn’t have the strongest arm, his best fit may be either back with Minnesota and the dome or the Arizona Cardinals.

Although Keenum isn't considered to be a franchise quarterback and nor should he be, the Broncos bringing in the veteran gunslinger if they can't sign Cousins makes sense. Selecting a quarterback in the upcoming 2018 NFL Draft might also be in the team's plans if Cousins indeed passes and Keenum ends up being their best option for a starter under center.

The Broncos currently have the No. 5 pick in the draft and have been rumored to favor selecting a quarterback once they're on the clock on April 26. Quite a few quarterbacks could be taken in the first round of next month's draft with a lot of talented players at the position set to be available.

As for Keenum, the veteran will likely receive some interest around the league after having an impressive first season with the Vikings. Returning to Minnesota isn't out of the question, but at this point, the Vikings might be willing to part with all three of their current quarterbacks with Sam Bradford and Teddy Bridgewater also potentially on the move in free agency.
