The Detroit Lions have endured a grueling 2018 NFL season. As a result, there has been some speculation regarding head coach Matt Patricia's job security.

It has ultimately culminated with a meeting with him and team owner Martha Firestone Ford this week. According to Kyle Meinke of Mlive.com, he is confident in his future in Detroit:

“Pretty confident. Everything for me right now is just keep moving forward and getting ready for the game this weekend.”

Patricia's comments are certainly not the most assuring response. There was plenty of hype surrounding the Lions doing into the 2018 campaign. They had fired longtime head coach Jim Caldwell last year due to their inability to get over the 9-7 hump that had stalled them over the past several seasons. Meanwhile, Patricia had built up an impressive resume during his time as defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. General Manager Bob Quinn was convinced Detroit was ready to take that next step.

Unfortunately, the Lions have fallen vastly short of expectations as they sit at 5-10 heading into the season finale. They were eliminated from playoff contention in late November and now own the fifth-worst record in the NFL. As a result, it appears Patricia's weekly meetings with Ford have gotten a bit more contentious recently.

It is hardly unusual for teams to let go of a head coach after one season in today's NFL. There are reports that rookie head coach Steve Wilkes could already be on his way out of Arizona. It will be interesting to see if the Lions give Patricia another chance after this season.
