Since being medically cleared to return from a groin injury last week, free agent cornerback Vontae Davis has been making his way around the league, visiting potential landing spots. He has already held visits with four different teams in the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, San Franciso 49ers, and Oakland Raiders, and now, the Miami Dolphins are in play.

Davis announced on Thursday that he planned on heading home to assess and determine where he wanted to sign this offseason for the 2018 campaign. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, it appears that the 29-year-old has added another team to the list, as he set up a visit with one of his former teams on Friday.

Davis spent the first three years of his career with the Dolphins before being traded to the Indianapolis Colts in late August prior to the 2012 season. He developed into a dependable cornerback over the last six years with the Colts while earning a pair of Pro Bowl selections in the process.

Davis was a key member of the secondary until last season where he played just five games before being released by the team due to a dispute over the significance of his injury.

The interest from the Dolphins is quite intriguing given that the team is significantly limited with salary cap space. They are expected to have around $10 million available after releasing tight end Julius Thomas and linebacker Lawrence Timmons along with declining the fifth-year option on offensive tackle Ja’Wuan James.

Even then, it is hard to see the front office being able to make a lucrative offer with such limited financial flexibility to appease Davis.

The Dolphins do have a need to address their secondary that allowed opposing quarterbacks to hold a 94.8 passer rating, which was the fifth highest mark in the league last season. The addition of Davis would be a step in the right direction toward resolving those prevalent issues against the pass.

Ultimately, Davis could just be expanding his options to give himself a better feel for which team will suit him best in this next chapter of his career.
